600 people reached the top of Mt. Everest in 2012. This blog got about 6,900 views in 2012. If every person who reached the top of Mt. Everest viewed this blog, it would have taken 12 years to get that many views.

“Shortest Living Man”

أقصر رجل بالعالم 55 سم  Junrey Balawing stands next to a rooster during a photo taking session with the Guinness World Records team in Sindangan, Zamboanga del Norte in southern Philippines. The Guinness World Records is set to recognise Balawing as the new “Shortest Living Man” on his 18th birthday on Sunday (the day he is eligible for the title) in Sindangan. Balawing, who is from the Philippines, reportedly stands at 22 inches (55cm), considerably shorter than the current holder of the title, Khagendra Thapa Magar from Nepal, who measures 26.4 inches. Should Balawing’s height prove shorter than Magar’s after the official measurement on Sunday, Balawing will not only hold the record for the shortest living man, but also the shortest living man in history, a statement from the Guinness World Records said on Saturday.

New measures announced for benefit of Haj pilgrims

External affairs minister S.M. Krishna on Monday announced a slew of measures for Haj pilgrims, including allowing a companion for those above 70 years of age, easier passport clearances and automatic inclusion of those applicants in the list who have been applying for three years.

Delivering his inaugural address at the annual Haj conference here, Mr Krishna said, “As part of our efforts to continuously improve Haj management, it has been decided to allocate confirmed seats to all the intending pilgrims over 70 years of age along with a companion, with effect from 2011.”

The minister said the decision taken last year to allow those Haj pilgrims who have applied unsuccessfully for three consecutive years to be automatically given a seat without having to participate in the draw of lots or Qurrah has already been implemented.

An additional Haj quota has also been sought from the Saudi Arabia government to accommodate the significant increase in the number of intending pilgrims. Read the rest of this entry »

Happy Birthday to Catholic State of France!

By Rehan Ansari,

Mumbai: Ban on veil by the French government drew much reaction the world over and India was not an exception. Many Muslim organizations including women in veil protested against the ban and expressed their disenchantment by submitting the memorandums to the Consulate General of France in Mumbai.

I had a chance of meeting with the French consulate in Mumbai, H E Francois Pujolas, where he explained in detail his government’s (Nicohals Sarkozy’s) view. Pujolas started his discussion stating that the law was not against Islam and it was nowhere mentioned in the text. Paradoxically in the same meeting he mentioned his government consultation with the French Muslim counsel that gave them the green signal, mentioning nowhere in the Quran it’s mentioned to conceal (instead of cover) the face.

L-to R- The Counslate General of France, Mr.H.E.Francois Pujolas and Rehan AnsariHe also stated that the law is passed by the democratically elected representatives of France and if the people in the France will not like this government’s decision than they will vote against it. According to him, the first and foremost reason is that veil is against the basic concept of living together in France. Everybody has a right to see whom is s/he talking to and dealing with in the public life. Public Safety and Terror threat were the other two reasons he cited. Read the rest of this entry »
