The Beginning of Revelation

“The beginnings of revelation to the Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) took the form of true dreams. Whenever he had this kind of dream, it was something clear like the break of day. Then he was made to love going into retreat and used to retire to the cave of Hira where he would devote himself to the worship of Allah alone, continuing in this worship for a number of nights until he felt inclined to return to his family. He would take provisions for his stay. Then he would return to Khadeeja (radi Allahu anha) to restock with provisions and do the same again. This lasted until the Truth came to him while he was in the cave of Hira. The angel came to him and said, ‘Read!’ He said, ‘I cannot read.’ The Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said, ‘He seized me and squeezed me until all the strength went out of me and then released me and said, ‘Read!’ I said, ‘I cannot read.’

“Then he seized me and squeezed me a second time until all the strength went out of me and then released me. Then he seized me and squeezed me a third time and then released me, and then he said, ‘Read in the name of your Lord who created man from a blood clot. Read, and your Lord is the Most Generous…’ Read the rest of this entry »

Believer Embodiment of Love

Rasul Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said: “The believer is an embodiment of love and affection. And the man who neither loves others nor is loved by others has no good or virtue in him.” [Mishkat]

Allah (subhana wa ta’ala) says in the Quran: “The believing men and believing women are protecting friends of one another.” [9:71]

Love and you will be loved. The person who avoids the company of other people, and whom the believers regard with feelings of disgust, is a deprived man.

Focus on Yourself

Rasul Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said: “O you who have entered Islam with your tongues but whose hearts faith has not entered: do not slander people, and do not ferret out people’s shameful points. Whoever searches out the shameful points of his brother, Allah will search out his shameful points, and if Allah searches out a person’s shameful points, be sure that He will disgrace him even if he should remain in the middle of his house.” [Abu Dawud]

Go Out and Get It!

hadithsRasul Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said: “Seek out that which benefits you, seek help only from Allah and never say you can’t do it. If any adversity comes to you do not say: ‘If I had only acted in such-and-such a way, it would have been such-and-such;’ but instead, say: ‘Allah has decreed (it) and what He willed, He has done,’ for verily, (the word) ‘if’ opens the way for the work of Satan.” [Sahih Muslim]

Through this hadith Rasul Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) tells us to:

1. Seek the beneficial.
2. Ask Allah (subhana wa ta’ala) for help.
3. Be optimistic. Nothing is impossible if Allah (subhana wa ta’ala) wills it for you.
4. Don’t cry over spilt milk.
5. Trust Allah (subhana wa ta’ala) in what He has willed for you.

Time is like a river . . . You cannot touch the same water twice, because the flow has passed and will never pass again. If there is something that will benefit you, make every effort and go after it! Seek it out! There is no failure, only lessons.

How to Teach

Rasul Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said: “Teach! Make things easy! And do not make things complicated! He repeated this three times and then he added: And if you get angry, keep quiet!” [Ibn Hajar Al-Asqalani, Al-Matalib Al-Aliyah; Ahmad Ibn Hanbal]

Rasul Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) came with the most important of teachings. He was sent by none other than the Supreme Most Being, the Creator of all that exists. Therefore, it stands to reason that Allah (subhana wa ta’ala) must have chosen Muhammad (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) because he would be the best teacher for this all important message. Considering this, let’s see what we can learn from this hadith regarding the qualities of excellent teachers: Read the rest of this entry »
